What does a photographer do when he is not taking pictures? He still takes pictures. Or he writes. Or he dreams that he writes and photographs. Julien Mignot, used to press commissions and always over hill and dale to meet the needs of his clients, steals moments between two utilitarian shots, holding on to what leaks away as one tries to hold on to a dream. Like the thin yellow garden hose that fills a pool of blue-green water, he knows there is no escape: the drops spinning into the ocean cannot be retained. Yet all the frames here are ramparts against oblivion and against the race of daily life — moments to oneself, intimate visions. He drew on the "miscellaneous" folder of his computer and pulled out these pictures made between 2009 and 2016, the ones that found no takers, that play no role, that he kept for himself, and shares them now very simply.
