Xavier Barral

Paris, France · since 2002

Éditions Xavier Barral was founded in Paris in 2002 by Xavier Barral, a photographer and former art director who had set up the visual communication agency Atalante in 1992 with his wife Annette Lucas. Its first book was Word for Word, a co-edition with the Centre Georges Pompidou on the work of the artist Daniel Buren, and its editorial line covers new forms of photography, contemporary art and science. Barral died in February 2019, and his former colleagues took over the house under the name Atelier EXB. Several of its books are made with LE BAL in Paris.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
