Originally published in 2018 and quickly out of print, the book is available again, enriched with six new stories and seven new photographs. In July 1985 the artists Hervé Guibert, Jacques Monory, Denis Roche and Sophie Calle were invited to project and comment on their photographs during an evening at the Théâtre Antique in Arles; Roche, who closed the programme, recounted in the dark the circumstances behind each shot, and the book pursues the anecdotes of those evenings.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
