Fourthwall books

Johannesburg, South Africa · since 2010

Fourthwall Books was established in Johannesburg in 2010 by the writer and editor Bronwyn Law-Viljoen and the designer Oliver Barstow, with Terry Kurgan joining in 2015 and co-directing the company with Law-Viljoen. It publishes art and photography books, and several of its titles have earned local and international awards for design and writing. It had a physical bookstore until the economic downturn set in motion by Covid-19, and it now sells through museum bookstores and through Idea Books in Europe and North America.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
