les presses du réel

Dijon, France · since 1992

Les presses du réel is a Dijon publisher and distributor of contemporary art, founded by Xavier Douroux and Franck Gautherot of the Consortium art centre. Its own list runs across contemporary art, criticism and theory, philosophy, architecture and design, the avant-gardes, cinema, dance and literature, in collections such as Perceptions and the ArTeC series, and it also issues records, CDs and DVDs, limited editions and a number of journals. The house distributes many other independent publishers as well, so its catalogue reads as a map of artists' books and art-world writing in French and English. Photography is one thread among many, present in monographs, history and theory more than in a dedicated line.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
