Fraglich

Austria · since 2007

Fraglich, which is German for questionable, was founded in 2007 by the Austrian photographer and researcher Lukas Birk, and it describes itself as a small publishing house based wherever its books are made. Its policy is to produce and distribute books locally first and to sell them abroad afterwards, so most photobooks have a small print run, usually of 300. It focuses on photobooks, including the Myanmar Photo Archive publications on amateur and studio photography, and since 2017 it has also published books and editions by other artists and researchers. One of its co-published titles won the Best International Photobook of the Year award at PHotoESPAÑA in 2021.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
