A visual diary by the artist BayBay, who had it rough in recent years and spent a lot of time in hospital recovering from severe alcoholism. My Universe was made on her hospital bed, expressing her inner feelings, her battle with her condition and the abandonment by her family.

“Every moment is difficult. It's not easy for me to think. It's not easy for me to sleep, to talk. It's not even easy for me to drink. I don't enjoy life. It's too difficult to enjoy life.”

Her work is a wonderful escape from dark thoughts into imagery that speaks of colours, air, light and the zest for life, and it creates a narrative rarely seen in the country, where alcoholism and addiction remain very much a taboo subject.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
