Café Royal Books

United Kingdom · since 2005

Café Royal Books was founded in 2005 and calls itself a family-run, independent publisher. Its name is a manifesto: Café for the democracy of the table, a neutral, accessible place for exchange, and Royal for a standard unit of paper in the print trade. It publishes documentary-type photography with links to the British Isles, communities, streets, events and cultural moments, usually from archives at least fifteen years old, and it presents images and sequences without commentary. Editions are modest in scale and deliberately tactile, and the aim is to make the work accessible through affordable, utilitarian publications. It has won the Royal Photographic Society Award for Photographic Publishing, and every hundredth book goes into Archive Six, an archive box.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
