"In 1979 Bill Jay was teaching photography at Arizona State University and I was shooting a book on bikers. I gave a slide show to his students of work in progress, with three members of the Dirty Dozen Motorcycle Club, one with his leg in plaster, sitting in the back row. They seemed to like the project, because they later invited me to join them for a weekend ride in the Arizona desert. I suspect there was a certain novelty in having a British photographer with a plummy accent in their midst, but all I can remember was keeping my face firmly behind the camera and catching as much of their lives as I could in a single weekend. These pictures are the result of those forty-eight hours."

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
