"The mid-nineties saw a significant shift in the social behaviour of New York after dark. This was, for all intents and purposes, the last pre-internet, pre-mobile era — the last time when, if you were meeting a friend at night, you had to plan it out in advance, because where are you wasn't yet a textable thing. You talked to strangers more. You would see friends weekly and know only their first name. Word of mouth and small printed flyers left at record shops were how you found out about the next gathering."

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
