Velvet Cell

Germany · since 2011

The Velvet Cell is an independent photobook publisher founded in 2011 by the photographer Éanna de Fréine, which began as an online magazine before its first book. Its own site says it was based in London from 2011 to 2012, in Taipei from 2013 to 2014 and in Osaka from 2015 to 2017, a route that has kept the house international. Its focus is urban and built environments, and it has published photographers from several continents who work on cities, infrastructure and the edges of towns. It also runs open calls for unpublished work, such as one on human environments in which the winner is published as a book by the house.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
