Goliga Books

Tokyo, Japan · since 2000

Goliga Books is a Tokyo photobook press run by Ivan Vartanian, and a Paris Photo exhibitor listing gives 2000 as its founding year. It makes artists' editions with photographers and books on the history of Japanese photography, and its approach, in the listing's words, emphasises experimentation grounded in research. Vartanian describes the imprint as an attempt to test new ways of distributing and engaging audiences with photography, with limited editions, experimental book works and photography-based events, and its best-known history title is Japanese Photography Magazines, a century-long history told through camera and photography magazines with more than 1,300 illustrations.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
