"Over three months in the summer of 1991 I would walk back and forth from my photo agency in Wapping, passing through the heart of the Bangladeshi community in the UK." The area where the southern end of Brick Lane meets Whitechapel High Street, in the borough of Tower Hamlets, was officially renamed Banglatown in 1997. In 1991 the neighbourhood was alive with the sounds of daily life — children playing in the streets, bustling markets, mosques and an emerging youth culture. The children of migrants, the so-called second generation, were balancing a heritage rooted in the Bengali language, custom and Islam with the fashion, music and subcultures of the city, while the area faced economic hardship and racism.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
