A leading figure of contemporary photography, Hiroshi Sugimoto continually explores our relationship with time and perception. Accompanying his solo exhibition at the Soulages Museum in Rodez, the book sets his photographs in dialogue with the building’s architecture and with the work of Pierre Soulages: light, the primacy of black and the horizon. It reads his work through honka-dori, the classical Japanese poetic practice of revisiting a previous work to shift its meaning.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
