Hiroshi Sugimoto developed his first series in 1974 on discovering the dioramas of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Struck by the artificiality of the set-ups, he realised the illusion would be more convincing through the lens of a camera assumed to carry stark reality. The book gathers the whole founding series for the first time, enriched with ten recent photographs from 2012.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
