Sugimoto's whole production is turned to the exploration of the relation between time and space, or rather to the perception we have of that union: the human eye, in its marvellous simplicity, like the camera that gives us back a version of it — a well defined image and, in his case, a plastic, almost material one, thanks to a sophisticated and truthful print in every smallest detail.

The unpublished collection of twenty works presented here was made entirely in Italy over three years and, for the first time, shows beside the frontal image of the stage also the stalls and the gallery of the theatre.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
