Alain Willaume spent the first five months of 2024 in residence in Kyoto, undertaking several exploratory trips to the regions of Kyushu, Noto, Kansai and Chugoku. The discovery, in a flea market, of a boro that belonged to a child - a small jacket patched by mothers from generation to generation - further fueled his curiosity and fascination for this country, where the beauty of the wear of a garment can reflect both maternal affection and the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi. A wandering photographer, Willaume captures enigmatic landscapes populated, along the pages, by ghostly apparitions. The disturbing force and extreme fragility evoked by his encounter with boron emerge with intensity. The black and white texture of the images, interrupted by rare photographs with muted colours, immerses the reader in the twilight of the Japanese winter. In this volume most of the images are reproduced on double pages, offering the reader a cinematic journey. Alain Willaume captures the ephemeral nature of things, but also their ability to inspire wonder. His images unfold like an imaginary narrative punctuated by tremors and fractures, revealing a twilight Japan pervaded by profound poetry. A sunless Japan, where the contours of reality become indistinct. To accompany this feverish journey, the writer Ryoko Sekiguchi offers her own perspective on the "liquefaction of images" through an unpublished text that addresses themes dear to her: the impermanence of things and ghostly presences.
