During the Troubles, the struggle that lasted from 1969 to 1998, Northern Ireland drew many foreign photojournalists. Some found there a subject that touched them personally and pushed them beyond the codes of reporting. That was the case of the Japanese photographer Akihiko Okamura (1929–1985), who from 1969 until his death made a singular body of work in colour, favouring soft luminous tones that stand at odds with the reportage of the time and that look instead at the ordinary life carried on around the conflict.
