Lavoué reveals the unexpected links between two worlds that seem distant but share gestures, traditions and a history: in the past, sailors took over theatres in winter, putting their mastery of knots, pulleys and teamwork to use on stage. A resident at the Comédie-Française since 2015, the photographer explored behind the scenes, where the stage bridge and the fly loft felt like the gangways of a frigate, and then boarded three emblematic vessels of the French Navy.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
