Essay by Greil Marcus
Erwan Illian’s flash and colour slide film photographs of the iconic punk rock scene on the Bowery, made in the late 1970s, are a unique and historic document never published before. At that time “serious” photographers were still shooting black and white and just pointing at the musicians on the stage. Like fellow colour pioneers Eggleston, Shore and Nan Goldin, Illian wanted the heart of the matter, and got it. These images resonate with the feel of the music and its connection with the scene and everyone in it. With a short essay by the legendary music and cultural writer Greil Marcus.
