Third and final volume of the series

After the first two volumes devoted to the view from above, the institutional view of political power, and the representations of the points of contact between public and private spheres in the second volume, the third volume finally focuses on the private sphere, in which the family stands out as the absolute protagonist of the Italian twentieth century, followed both in its most inward, hidden domesticity, gender differences, sexual roles, “nuclear” or “extended” arrangements, and in its outward projection, its relationship with the labour market, with patterns of consumption, with public sociability. Alongside the family, the groups of small communities, portrayed in images gathered in local archives, the work of photographers who often became the unwitting historians of their own territory. A volume rich in illustrations: not only a photographic history of Italian society, skilfully organised and consultable on several levels, but also an original and innovative way of conceiving historical discourse.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
