Curated by Arianna Rinaldo

A photographic investigation into the terrorist attacks that struck Italy from the 1970s to the early 2000s. The subjects of the photographs are the means of transport involved in these events — all that remains tangible today. How to tell of violence, hatred, terror? Five years, hundreds of hours of research, waiting and listening; the silence of solitary work shared with those who remember, who survived, who suffered. Fabio Mantovani's project focuses on the memory of a period in which Italy was the victim of a series of attacks of various origins, much discussed and not all ever fully clarified. The photographic subjects are the vehicles involved in these episodes, chosen both to show the raw reality of the remains, captured in a nocturnal atmosphere that makes clear their status as material witnesses, and for the closeness and familiarity each of us has with cars, aircraft and trains. What emerges is an ontology of violence, condensed into images that are not easily removed from memory, just as what they depict cannot be.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
