Dedicated an important part of his oeuvre to the women of his native alpine valley, as the first and, for a long time, only photographer there, running his own photo studio alongside an optician's store. Yet instead of making his artistic work public, he kept it in his attic, only discovered decades after his death. The portraits collected here show women of different ages and social classes and go far beyond the stiff official portraits common at the time: posture, clothes, faces, and eyes speak volumes, demonstrating a special intimacy and empathy toward the people portrayed.
