Accompanying an exhibition curated at a New York gallery, this book surveys the work of a photographer who emerged from the vibrant Japanese avant-garde scene of the early 1970s. Photographing instinctively and spontaneously, her visual language is poetic and deeply personal: contrasted black and white images, often blurred or grainy, imbued with an introspective, haunting quality. Throughout a long career she has photographed women with distinct attentiveness -- a face brushed by the wind, a woman turned away from the camera, a girl reading on a sofa -- filled with a knowing, empathetic quality that stands apart in the medium's history. Her 1973 debut work is considered one of the major publications in that history; from the 1980s she expanded her travels to Southeast Asia and Europe, describing her career as an unbroken sequence of travels.
