In 2021 the writer and the photographer began working together on a book about Babyn Yar, the site on the outskirts of Kyiv where the 1941 Nazi massacre took place. Then, on February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine: the horrors of a distant era echo deafeningly, and the two of them start over from another perspective, as direct witnesses to the atrocities of a new war. Between the scars of a buried past and the lacerating wounds of the present, this is the story, told in words and images, of a journey through an Ukraine full of pain, aspiring only to some form of peace and normality.
