Photographed over three visits to Berlin in 2000 on a DAAD artist residency, this book turns above all to the city's eastern half, the former Communist-bloc districts still visibly caught between a nineteenth-century grid and decades of political rupture. Critic Stefano Boeri describes Basilico's Berlin as a "maybe city": an interior, almost nineteenth-century geometry that Basilico projects onto the real stone city, only for that abstract grid to be constantly unsettled by what the camera actually finds. The result, in Boeri's words, is a rich image that ultimately outgrows the very model used to decipher it. The volume includes a conversation between Basilico, architect Stefano Boeri and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
