Across the African continent, and especially in the sub-Saharan region, sunlight has a particularly stark quality — something apparent in traditional buildings and in the way the light shapes the daily routines of those who live in them. Without artificial light, architecture had to use the sun to create a source inside a building while protecting its inhabitants from its intensity. Iwan Baan photographs these buildings in Burkina Faso together with the architect Francis Kéré, following the movement of light through rooms built to hold it.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
