The series is an attempt to explore the origin of the eccentricity of Japanese visual culture through the use of traditional methods, by composing a fictional documentary for the audienceless 2020 Olympics, postponed because of the restrictions of the pandemic. During that phantasmal time the artist decided to turn the strange experience into a series of contemporary Mitate-e, a genre within Japanese art that wittily plays with allusions, puns and gaps in what we understand, by depicting and parodying historical and traditional events.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
