For Arja Hyytiäinen the notebook has long been a favoured working tool: part diary, part laboratory, her notebooks teem with intuitions and detours, text and image tangled together, crossings-out and cuts that keep every page open to new creative directions. "My starting point in photography," she writes, "is to keep a trace of things. Every experience leaves a mark, and a photograph can become evidence of it, fictional or not."
