A territory tells itself in its full length and narrowness without naming itself: twenty years of images building a single place that stands for every other place. Across the pages the photographs pass like apparitions, inventions of a tightrope walker of the road, barely glimpsed before they vanish - moving images, and something moving in us after we have seen them, a confined country that is at the same time wholly open, a metaphorical country that is entirely real.
