"In 2015 I was invited on a residency in Quebec as part of a collaboration between Diaphane and the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie en Gaspésie. After ten hours by bus from Montreal, I arrived in the Baie des Chaleurs. The territory is vast and seductive, it invites movement, and yet this time I wanted to settle. I had heard of Petite-Vallée on the north coast. I crossed Gaspésie Park in one go, went round the Chic-Chocs and followed the coast along the famous Route 132. At nightfall I had arrived. I rented a room facing the river. The regular sight of eagles above my head, the stories of moose and bears, told me of an extraordinary territory. In Petite-Vallée I would therefore photograph extraordinary beings." Coming from cinema, Claudia Imbert regularly mixes film and photography in her projects; she is passionate about her contemporaries at the very heart of their space and uses staging. Invited on residency to a small town in Gaspésie, she produced a series on ways of inhabiting space. In Petite-Vallée, under inclement skies laden with clouds, the inhabitants present themselves as blocks that face us: bodies stand out from a landscape given over to immensity, gazes manifest inner journeys of which only the characters hold the key. Nothing psychological in these larger-than-life portraits: each plays their own score as a soloist, and by their presence imprints their mark on the place and gives the image its stature.
