When Kourtney Roy found herself confined in Normandy during the Coronavirus crisis, her unlimited imagination delivered a photographic series entitled Survivalist Failures. Every day Roy offered an ironic, offbeat and sharp guide that she published on social networks, each photograph accompanied by lessons such as "Lesson 11: In the apocalypse don't forget about personal hygiene". During lockdown our daily life changed abruptly and our bearings were upset; for the survivalist movement, everything they had been preparing for years had arrived, a worldwide quarantine. Roy drew inspiration from it, with her very particular artistic language, and in the manner of the survivalists she staged herself in unusual situations that perhaps recall a childhood spent telling herself fantastic stories in the Canadian forests. The series places us in a post-apocalyptic atmosphere set in her garden, a playground of infinite possibilities, where she stages herself in self-portraits, the common thread of her work, and uses her body to question the way women have been represented in photography in different eras. These performances between fiction and reality are the offbeat testimony of those weeks we went through, a testimony of an unusual era. Yasmine Lavizzari
