The myth of the city of Ys is a popular tale of Brittany that tells the story of a city engulfed beneath the waves of the Iroise Sea because of the fault of its princess, Dahut. This myth has inspired many artists over the centuries, but the photographer Benjamin Deroche chose to explore the legend through his art. In his book Ys he takes us on a visual journey through enigmatic, evocative images that carry us into a world at once mystical and realistic. The photographs are imbued with a dark, mysterious atmosphere, creating an immersive ambiance that evokes the spirit of the myth; they are often taken in abandoned places, vestiges of history that add a further dimension to the narrative. The colours are often dark and saturated, with shades of green and blue recalling the sea and marine legends. The book is also accompanied by a text by Philippe Le Guillou recounting the history of the city of Ys and its importance in Breton culture.
