Foreword by Harper Joy Steele

Toby Huss has been exploring and photographing the vast, connective, visual sinew of America for over five decades, from Tallahassee to Anchorage and from New York to Reno, and to a hundred beautiful and busted towns in between. He has rambled through abandoned shopping malls and perfect bingo halls, greasy spoons and derelict saloons, always looking for the shared, mostly unnoticed national aesthetic. American Sugargristle is his first collection of such photographs, accompanied by his singular text, sometimes humorous and often not, so that he captures these moments with the wit and pathos of his writing as well as with his lens. He believes that the heart of America, the very idea of it, is found in its frayed edges, and, as Harper Joy Steele writes in her foreword, he sees all the beautiful, mundane, sad, human, ugly and perfect things we tend to overlook, and brings them home. The pictures include a brick building beside a yellow house with a pickup truck and a winding road across a high desert plain.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
