Dashwood takes the original grid composites of De Geer's rare 1980 book Med kameran som tröst (The Camera as Consolation) to capture the spirit of Bohemian life in Stockholm in the 1960s and 70s. The black-and-white pages are grids of four snapshots each: portraits of friends, street scenes, a skull carved above a doorway, an animal portrait and a performer leaping in a doorway. An integral part of the Swedish underground, De Geer was also active as a filmmaker, painter, publisher and political activist, yet he remains largely unknown outside Sweden.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
