Since beginning his career at the Village Voice in the 1970s, the American photographer Bill Bernstein has captured subjects from celebrities and rock stars to urban subcultures. He first came to prominence through his candid series on New York's nightlife of the late 1970s, influenced by classic image makers such as Richard Avedon, Diane Arbus and Irving Penn. Documenting the golden age of discos and nightclubs such as Studio 54, where sexual liberation, freedom of expression and diversity reigned, each photograph takes the viewer into a secret world, post-Stonewall and pre-AIDS, that chronicles a unique period in contemporary American history.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
