Paige Powell came to New York from Portland, Oregon in 1980 and quickly became a fixture of the downtown art scene, a close confidante of Andy Warhol and a member of his inner circle, which included Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, whom she dated. She photographed the everyday activities around her, observing, documenting and participating in the vanguard culture of 1980s New York and capturing some of the most profound moments of art, culture and nightlife at the end of the twentieth century. Published by Dashwood and brought to life by Gucci, the hardcover limited-edition series highlights three aspects of her work and the cultural significance of the period, from Harlem to the East Village to SoHo: Beulah Land, a visual diary installation she created in 1984 for an art space, bar and lounge of that name on Avenue A in the East Village; Animals, a theme dear to her as an animal activist; and Artists Eating, a subject she documented extensively; plus Paige Powell, an accompanying book about the photographer and her life. It features rare and never-before-seen images of David Bowie, Leo Castelli, George Condo, Bill Cunningham, Jeffrey Deitch, Fab 5 Freddy, Vincent Gallo, Jerry Hall, Debbie Harry, David LaChapelle, Madonna, Robert Mapplethorpe, Glenn O'Brien, Ed Ruscha, Gus Van Sant, Kenny Scharf, Julian Schnabel, Stephen Sprouse and many others.
