A zine made to accompany Alix Vernet's exhibition at Helena Anrather, 132 Bowery, New York, from 7 July to 11 August 2023. In her first documented series, it follows the artist's process of making guerrilla moulds of the building facades and sidewalks of Lower Manhattan. Through ceramic sculpture and photographs she has developed a way of isolating, replicating and rearranging material fragments of the built environment to reveal the continually shifting terrain of the city's urban fabric. The black-and-white pictures show her at work, pouring plaster from a bucket into a cardboard mould on the pavement, white plaster running down a tenement facade with a fire escape, and a round cast of a manhole cover held upright in the street.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
