Travels to Los Angeles, Reykjavík, Tokyo and New York reaffirmed for Grace Ahlbom the role of photography as a means of access to people and places that she otherwise might not have had. The camera became a key into the private world of musicians, skaters and others, and capturing the essence of those people by documenting their ephemeral manifestations of idleness meant, for Ahlbom, capturing their truest selves. The colour pictures include a guitarist on stage, a figure in a black beanie, a printed T-shirt and orange shorts seen from behind in a suburban street, a young person with purple-dyed hair smoking at a window, bare branches against a night sky and a steaming geothermal landscape below a snow-covered mountain.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
