A photographic project in the Zengwen River basin in southern Taiwan, exploring the deeper layers of Taiwanese folk belief and the spiritual traces that persist, though fading amid modernisation. In the rituals, the tang-ki spirit mediums invite a deity to possess their bodies and, wielding ritual implements, slash and strike themselves in a trance, oblivious to pain; the blood summons unseen warriors to ward off the ever-shifting river, once known as the Blind Serpent, whose course has changed several times over the centuries. Through this act the ritual seeks to soothe the scars and wounds imprinted in collective memory. Shrines, graves, plants, wounds, blood and flowing water appear less as an ethnographic record than as an invisible current pulsing beneath the land, generational pain transformed into faith, the spiritual scar tissue of the Taiwanese people.
