Karen Sato's first photobook, assembled from pictures made over fifteen years from 2009. Its starting point is the act of seeing itself: how the world and the self are connected and what images they form, looking not only at what is visible but at unseen images and layers of memory. Photography duplicates the world, but the copies become fragments, overlap or are peeled away and raise new images, and the book quietly weaves a record of repeated observation and thought, with pictures that answer one another as the pages turn. An accompanying text places the work in the lineage of konpora photography, the Japanese response to the 1966 exhibition Contemporary Photographers: Toward a Social Landscape, and in an age of informational capitalism in which realism has lost its outside.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
