A body of photographs Hiromi Furusato has made over about ten years, from 2015 to the present, centred on a woman living in Ishinomaki, Miyagi, and turning the camera toward the people living in the same time and toward the scenes and landscapes unfolding around them. The fragile sensation of being alive in an elusive present collides and dissolves in the pictures, and, accepting uncertainty, the work moves beyond meaning toward an exploration of being. Women form relationships across generations, grandmothers, mothers, daughters, friends and neighbours, passing gazes and moments from one to another, and the gaze directed at them is returned to us. Like the ebb and flow of the sea, life and death, memory and presence keep shifting. An obi text by Lieko Shiga accompanies the book.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
