A project of photographs and texts tracing a journey of discovery that began when Tamami Iinuma, who arrived unexpectedly in the former East German city of Leipzig in 2008 and lived there for about six years from 2009, came across the Interhotel Merkur (now The Westin), a building undertaken by a Japanese construction company during the Cold War. Drawn to its unusual history, she interviewed people involved while photographing the city in snapshots and exploring her own relationship with it, and she was especially interested in the hotel as a theatrical space that recurs in films and novels. The book follows three Japanese houses found in East Germany, a poetics of the home in which memory and experience dwell between people and architecture.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
