A portrait series that began during the pandemic, when Yuka Iwahashi set up non-woven fabric in her room and projected onto it photographs she had taken of people close to her. She re-photographed parts of the images floating in the space on black-and-white film and printed them onto photographic paper with photograms made from plant roots, a process of repeatedly drawing the image closer in search of the point where looking meets memory. The series was selected for the Dior Photography and Visual Arts Award 2022 in Arles. Alongside it she has continued to photograph her family and the land where they live: a grandfather seated against the green of the garden, a father lowering his gaze. The booklet is the first volume of AKAAKA BIRD.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
