Photographs that fix in memory an act of violence and the longing for peace. In 2006, at the Nagasaki memorial ceremony for the atomic bomb victims, Itcho Ito, then mayor of the city, opened his Peace Declaration by asking what on earth human beings are doing; the following April, during his campaign for a fourth term, he was shot in the back and died. Makoto Yasumori, a relative of the politician who had followed his career since childhood, interviewed the people who had supported him and photographed the traces of the event, their memories and the everyday life of Nagasaki, with townspeople answering the camera in dialect and with album photographs and copies of newspapers of the time slipped between the pages. Not a mere record, the book keeps asking what the incident means and how it can be handed on, a gaze that links people and city, past and present.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
