Book design by Yuri Suyama
Photographs made while Yuhki Touyama cared for her dying grandmother at home during the pandemic, after she resigned from an eleven-year job to move in with her. Colour pictures of the neighbourhood, taken in the few minutes she could go out shopping as a desperate breather, alternate with black-and-white images of the garden seen from the room, made to share the gaze of a grandmother who could no longer leave the house and saw ink paintings on the wall in her hallucinations. The grandmother does not appear in a single picture, and the different time of carer and cared-for becomes vivid; the photographs left behind announce an absence and became a way of continuing the conversation. The cover lets colour and black-and-white images show through each other, as if the boundary wavered.
