A volume of photographs, a chronology compiled by Keiji Tsuyuguchi and excerpts from historical texts, begun in 2017 and built around places that human forces have emptied of dwelling. The pictures follow Hokkaido, incorporated into the nation together with its indigenous Ainu and opened to colonisation from the mainland; Tokyo and Sapporo, home of the Development Commission that directed the relocations; mining regions now facing decline and disappearance; the Difficult-to-Return Zone around the Fukushima Daiichi plant; and the Imperial Palace, an invisible space where residing is excluded. He looks for a strong homogeneity between spaces so different in origin, history and time, spaces invisible by nature yet made visible through ritual. The chronology points to context while the photographs float free of it and appear elsewhere; the two are equals, bound together with their gap.
