A critical photo-essay on what it means to look at a photograph, by the writer Akiko Otake, who has written widely on photography. Through a wandering photo gallery hung with 36 pictures by internationally renowned photographers, among them Nobuyoshi Araki, Shoji Ueda, Masahisa Fukase, Daido Moriyama and Robert Doisneau, she explores the possibilities of seeing. The names of the artists are deliberately omitted, which lets the reader examine each picture closely, imagine vividly and weave words around it, as photography beckons us into an exploration of vision and contemplation. Short biographies of the photographers at the end of the book offer new perspectives once the pictures have been seen.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
