A culminating volume that gathers 262 photographs from the two defining series of Taiji Matsue, gazetteer and CC, in a large format. Working by collecting place names, he collects nature in gazetteer, the deserts, forests, mountain ranges and plains of the world, and cities in CC. He chooses the time and direction in which no shadows fall and excludes the sky and the horizon to pursue flatness, and the pictures have a clarity he calls absolute focus, in which every element across the surface appears equal and details the naked eye cannot catch emerge. They are not aerial photographs: the scenes were chosen after careful research and shot from high ground facing the landscape squarely, under four conditions of clear sky, front light, frontal view and absolute focus. Made on large-format colour film between 2000 and 2017, once digital scanning and printing reached sufficient quality in 2008.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
