The first collection of the legendary work of Hisae Imai (1931-2009), a photographer who debuted in the 1950s and built a literary world of avant-garde images, centred on poetic early pieces in the then-rare medium of colour in which abstraction and figuration mix. It gathers her striking 1956 debut Daydreams; A Donkey, the King and Myself, inspired by a poem by Jacques Prevert; Ophelia, in which Ophelia and an old woman exchange bodies and Ophelia is reborn; Sea-born Fantasy, which dismantles a story by Hoffmann with playfulness; and Model and North Wind, Photo Fantasy, Series: Child and Energy, made for years as covers of a corporate magazine. A taxi collision in 1962 temporarily took her sight and she turned later to horses, combined with multiple exposures in the pictures of racehorses that made her name. Fine art photographer, commercial photographer and studio portraitist at once, she was a mould-breaker, brought back here with a text by Masako Toda.
